Themed 5K and even shorter races have become highly popular in America, acting as a major driver in the running industry by attracting casual participants, walkers, and families who might not compete in traditional road races.
While traditional race participation has reportedly declined, themed events like color runs, mud runs, and bubble runs have successfully drawn millions of new, often first-time participants into the sport.
I’ve run in several themed races, and they’re always a fun time, especially those that have everyone dress up in costumes. These include Halloween and Thanksgiving-themed races, as well as Santa runs, where everyone wears a Santa suit included with their entry fee.
However, I think the most original is held in May in Minnesota, and this two-ish mile race has everyone wearing a banana suit, which is provided by organizers as part of registration. Did I mention there’s also a running gorilla, and you get a special prize if you beat the beast?

Registration Is Open Now For The Going Bananas Run
The Going Bananas Run returns to Duluth, Minnesota, on Saturday, May 30, and registration is open now.
Each racer receives their very own banana suit to run in this race that starts and finishes at Bent Paddle, located at 1832 W. Michigan Street in Duluth.

The race begins at 10 am, and then a couple of minutes later, they release “The Gorilla”, who runs out to chase the bananas. Those who beat the gorilla to the finish receive a special prize. It’s really a fun sight to see, hundreds of people in banana suits racing someone in a gorilla suit.
The Going Bananas Run is open for people of all ages, and because the course is only about 2 miles, people of all skill levels can participate.
Registration is $40 per runner, plus a $3.65 processing fee. All runners receive a banana suit, a complimentary beer, bananas, a custom bib, and a champion pin.
Proceeds from the event support Project Joy, a local nonprofit that focuses on helping families and schools right here in the Duluth area. In a nutshell, they make sure kids have what they need to feel supported, confident, and ready for school.
